Destination Dreaming Program Coordinator, Clint Miller, has returned from our final visit to Fiji for 2010. He provides a Dreaming Project progress report…
“Another amazing and successful trip to Fiji. It was certainly a different experience travelling solo- my final trip for 2010 was the first time in years that I have travelled to Fiji without an expedition or project team.
The past 8 days provided a fantastic opportunity to develop further project opportunities and consolidate progress to date. Not to mention a quiet surf at Cloudbreak one morning!
Nasouri Highlands Primary School Project
At a Government meeting, it was confirmed that we have successfully jumped through the many required hoops and our application is now in the hands of the powers that be in Suva.
I met with the Village School Committee in early December regarding the progress of the application and to plan for 2011. The village presented a tanoa of kava to me on behalf of the community for the funds raised by Destination Dreaming and past program participants. We are thrilled to announce that we banked $16,000.00 on September 8th 2010 to the School Trust Account. A huge vinaka vaka levu (thank you very much) to all Fiji Dreamers, associates and friends who have supported the fundraising efforts to date.
School Committee Manager and Elder Alifereti Nasokia and I confirmed with the committee that two applications are pending approval by the Government: approval for establishment of a school building and for recognition to provide teaching staff to the proposed school. We have a further application pending with the Native Land Trust Board, that is waiting on Government approval to allow issuance of a lease to the School Committee for the school construction.
This process has been a lengthy and often frustrating one, having been in the hands of the Government for almost 9 months. However, to ensure the economic sustainability of the project were are committed to securing ongoing government support. There are too many buildings built by organisations around the world that soon fall idle due to lack of ongoing funding for teachers, resources and maintenance.
We are pleased to report that 2010 saw a number of project achievements, including:
- formal establishment of the Village School Committee;
- registration of the School Constitution;
- completion and lodgement of application for lease of the proposed school grounds;
- completion and lodgement of education forms EA2 and EA3;
- completion and lodgement of Village petition and proposed attendance list;
- completion of School Five-Year Development Plan;
- collaborative fundraising of $16,000 through the efforts of past Fiji Dreamers, Vinaka Fiji (a fundraising group of past participants from Warrnambool high schools), friends and associates of Destination Dreaming, and Destination Dreaming directors.
We look forward to a government response to the application early in 2011, with construction tentatively planned for late April 2011.
A huge thank-you to all our supporters to date. Stand by for our next Project update early in the New Year. Of course, if you are aware of any organisations or friends who may be interested in supporting this Project, please do not hesitate to forward our details or this update.
